Introduction

What is mindset coaching? How can the practice help you in your life? For one, it can help you focus on performing everyday tasks. According to a study, the average American does not pay attention to what they are doing 47 percent of the time.  Mindfulness is effective at making you aware of your thoughts and your surroundings. It clears your mind of any distractions and eliminates any negative emotions that hinder productivity. When practicing mindfulness, you shift from doing mode into being mode, and focus more on process, feelings, intentions and creative choices. Mindset coaching is comparable to meditation and shares similar traits. Meditation is practiced for a specific amount of time, and has various purposes, from clearing your mind, to developing kindness and compassion. Mindfulness is said to be a form of meditation that increases awareness of your thoughts and can be applied at any time whether you are walking, running or sitting.  While they have alternative approaches to improving your mental wellbeing, mindfulness and meditation can go great together. You can use meditation to clear out your mind of any intrustions and use mindfulness to focus on the present and become more aware of your surroundings. Now that you have an idea of what mindfulness is, we will go through the history so you can know the origins of the practice and how it transformed to the modern practice widely used today.

History of Mindset Coaching

Mindfulness has a long history that stretches back thousands of years. Its origins can be traced back to eastern cultures, and was often associated with religion. The Hindu religion’s scripture, Bhagavad Gita, documents a discussion between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, where Arjuna displays distorted thinking and Lord Kusha alleviates this through mental healing, and guides him with the right course of action to triumph over evil. Buddhism encourages followers to free up their mind and to follow the path of enlightenment. Both Hinduism and Buddhism were created in the same region, and they both focus on harmony with nature, and being in a complete state of mind. Jon Kabat-Zinn is credited for bringing mindfulness to the western world around the late 1970s. He introduced his technique of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) therapy as a holistic method at the University of Massachusetts. One of the purposes of mindset coaching has been to alleviate stress, and it has been adopted into modern psychology due to its great effects in dealing with mental problems. Although mindfulness is applied secularly, it shares some values with the religions described above, and it has presented a conundrum for psychologists who want to keep their practice separated from religion.

The Benefits of Mindset Coaching

How would mindfulness help you out in your everyday life? Mindset coaching has demonstrable results in reducing anxiety and increasing your mood levels among other effects.  The practice has grown from obscurity to reaching mainstream popularity, with psychologists incorporating some of their practices. The method has been observed in clinical trials for pain relief, anxiety reduction, relationship fixing and stress-reduction among other uses. One study conducted in 2008 found that participants who practiced mindfulness experienced reduced rumination and decreased depression and better memory capacity. A meta analysis of 39 studies totaling 1,400 participants conducted in 2010 also found that participants experienced stress reduction when practicing mindfulness.  They also experienced lower anxiety and mood symptoms. MBSR has also been studied on registered nurses and found that it had a great effect in improving psychological outcomes and work satisfaction, and increased mindfulness which in turn enhanced nurse presence. MSBR as a result has been useful for individuals who are in high-stress jobs and is helpful in reducing turnover rate. So if you’re wondering whether mindfulness is a viable solution to improve your life, the answer is a strong yes. It has been shown to increase job satisfaction, reduce depression and lift mood swings. Most of all, it helps clear your mind of negative thoughts and helps you focus on achieving your goals.

How can you apply mindfulness to your everyday life?

MBSR was originally developed to relieve suffering and improve the mental health of its participants. It has been used for solving problems in leadership, staying motivated, and working well with others. For mindfulness to work well, you have to put in the dedication to make it work for you, and we will go over some practices you can apply to to improve your mental well being.

Before you begin, think about what specifically you want to achieve in your day. What is the underlying motivation for applying mindfulness? Find a quiet place and sit in a relaxed posture, taking deep breaths. Think about what you can do to make the most impact in a day. Think about why you need to better yourself, and set your intentions. Make sure to take deep breaths and revisit your intention throughout the day. In the middle of your day, note any negative feelings that pop up, and describe them in words as concise as possible without going into much detail on what caused those problems. Doing so can bring up negative emotions and hinder your productivity. When you eat, make sure to take multiple deep breaths before consuming. Close your eyes and try to savor your meal, and stop if you don’t have any sensation of hunger. Try to note any sensations that arise when feeling hungry. Do you feel shakiness? Is your stomach growling? After you take 3 bites, ask yourself if you really want to continue eating. Also, try to create triggers for everyday routines. For example, when you step out the door of your house, take in deep breaths and think about what your intentions are for today. These are some of the actions you start with for improving your mind and life.
